Rebecca Cole

Founder & Director

Rebecca completed a Bachelor of Education with English and Drama at Cambridge University in 2000. She has over 20 years of teaching experience and has three children. She has been running Camp Makemake for seven years now and is passionate about everything to do with it - especially the campers!  At camp she spends her days madly racing around making sure that everyone is safe and having fun and ensuring that all the programs are operating smoothly.

Sophie Emery

Senior Counselor

UK

TEACHER: SANTIAGO COLLEGE

Big hearted Sophie hails from Huddersfield in England. She is a caring, hard working and warm counselor and is a fully qualified teacher. Sophie who is a mother of three, studied languages and education at university in the UK. Sophie has taught at The Grange School and at Bradford school and is currently a primary school teacher at Santiago College. This will be Sophie's fourth year at Camp Makemake. The campers love her stories, silly songs and funny jokes. Sophie is our chief baker and could probably make a Makemake blueberry pie in her sleep. Sophie is one of  the counselors that our campers turn to when they need a bit of TLC. She's always there with a big hug, some no nonsense advice and a joke or a riddle to cheer them up. Sophie is a key part of our Makemake team and we feel grateful to have her onboard.

Angie Kaster

TEACHER: NIDO DE AGUILAS

Meet Angie, an adventurous and creative spirit who brings over a decade of teaching experience to Camp Makemake! Currently in her sixth year teaching fifth grade at Nido de Aguilas in Santiago.  She has lived in the US, England, Egypt, India, Argentina, and Chile—each adding to her love of diverse cultures and connections. As a mother of two young children, aged 6 and 9, she understands the joy of discovering nature and friendships and staying curious, values she can't wait to share with campers. In her free time, Angie enjoys life along the cabin on the river in El Arrayan, where she spends her days sketching, painting, reading, weaving, cooking, playing board games, and challenging friends to ping pong. Her enthusiasm for fun and creativity shines in everything she does, and she’s ready to make this summer one filled with laughter, outdoor adventures, and meaningful experiences. Camp Makemake is thrilled to welcome Angie to the team, where her passion and energy will help create lasting memories for all!

Victoria Villar

Senior Counselor

URUGUAY

TEACHER: THE GRANGE SCHOOL

Vicky is a fully qualified teacher from Uruguay and has worked at The Grange School in Santiago for over 18 years as the deputy head of the English department. Vicky is proud mum to two lovely daughters. Naturally athletic, Vicky is passionate about climbing mountains and loves sports. She has an adventurous spirit - she is always off on a mission with the campers to find a Gruffalo, a hidden fairy city or a missing sock! Vicky is our resident clean freak, constantly sweeping out tents, teaching campers how to fold their clothes and making sure hands, faces and teeth are clean - the campers tremble when she is on tent inspection duty! Vicky can often be found in the camp kitchen whipping up a batch of her grandmother’s homemade gnocchi or some other gourmet delight. Vicky is a founding, much-loved and invaluable member of the team. Her camp spirit and enthusiasm are unparalleled.

Mariá Paz Valenzuela

Senior Counselor

CHILE

SPECIAL NEEDS TEACHER

María Paz Valenzuela is an enthusiastic and energetic counselor, as well as a fully qualified special education teacher with a master’s degree in special needs. She is also a trained yoga instructor and a talented storyteller, and she excels as an artist in mixed media, particularly collage. Currently, she is in the process of writing and illustrating children’s books.

María Paz is a mother of three, and her children adore her for her empathy, fun-loving nature, and caring demeanor. She spent the last year in Tennessee, USA, with her husband and children, where she got involved in the local community, conducting inspiring workshops with the Latin community. Her time there has filled her with new ideas and creative approaches.

This is her second year as a senior counselor at Camp Mákemáke, and her presence is essential to our team. With her guitar in hand, María Paz not only teaches but also delights everyone with her incredible storytelling and singing sessions, being famous in Talca for her ability to tell stories in a captivating way. Her infectious laughter, generosity, and passion for art and education make every day at camp special and full of magic. We are so grateful to have her with us!

Ginette Boobier

Senior Counselor

UK

Ginette is a fun loving mother of three, who brings her sparkle to every occasion. Hailing from south east England, she has lived in Santiago for over a decade with her husband and children. She is one of the most positive and optimistic people we know, and her vibrant upbeat energy permeates throughout everything she does. Ginette loves the challenge of trying her hand at different handicrafts and sharing her skills, whether that be crocheting or cake decorating, lettering or macrame. She is always on fire in the arts and crafts area. Ginette adores baking, regularly whipping up new nibbles to be devoured by her friends and family.
And on top of all of her other skills, Ginette is an absolute water baby, competing in local swim meets in her free time, and so she can’t wait to get involved in the camps water activities. We can't wait to have her back at Camp Mákemáke this summer.

Valentina Oemick

Camp Counselor

CHILE

STUDENT NURSE

Valentina is a second year counselor at Camp Makemake and we already know that she will do an amazing job. She has an outgoing, fun and bubbly personality. Valentina is in her third year of training to be a nurse the Universidad Andrés Bello in Viña del Mar. We are sure that her nursing skills will be a huge plus at camp. Valentina is a graduate from St Margaret's school and her English is fluent. Vale has had a lot of experience with kids as  she has worked for many years as a babysitter and is very caring and nurturing. Valentina loves sports and the great outdoors. We are excited to have Valentina join our team again this year.

Bernardita Leiva

Camp Counselor

STUDENT TEACHER

Berni will be joining us for the second year running. She is a trainee teacher in the Universidad de los Andes education faculty. She is also a wonderful person and an exceptionally good counselor. Berni excels everywhere but has a natural affinity for the arts and crafts department. Campers will be inspired to unleash their creativity under her expert guidance. Berni's serene and nurturing demeanor creates a safe and supportive environment for campers. She's the one they can turn to when they need a kind word or a comforting presence. Berni is very empathetic, making sure  that campers feel understood, valued, and heard. She's always there to offer a caring shoulder and a listening ear. Berni is wise beyond her years and is always full of sound advice. Berni has a very international background and like all of our counselors she is fluent in both English and Spanish.We love having Berni at camp and can't wait to see what skills she will bring this year, last year she had a whole group of campers and counselors finger knitting.

Sebastian Valdés

Camp Counselor

CHILE

STUDENT 

Sebastián is our very first camper turned counselor and he is simply amazing. Last year, he was a junior counselor for two weeks during the summer and this year he will return for four weeks as fully fledged counselor. Sebastián is fluent in both English and Spanish and also has a pre-intermediate level of French, which allows him to connect with a diverse group of campers. As a child, he was shy and introverted, which motivates him to support children who may feel the same way, especially those who are not used to being away from home.  Sebastián particularly enjoys leading water activities and promoting teamwork through games, always striving to create a lively and motivating environment. Sebastian is a team player and is a state of the art counselor, we are honoured to have him work with us this summer.

Alberto Garcia-Huidobro

Founder & Operations Manager

AGRONOMIST

Alberto is a trained agronomist and the head farmer at Mákemáke farm.  At camp Alberto is in charge of horse back riding, water sports, camp maintenance (a big job!), expeditions and our nightly camp fires!  Alberto is passionate about nature, ecology, the environment, organic farming and is an experienced outdoorsman. Alberto guides our night hikes, river rafting trips and plays a mean game of table tennis. You will often find him educating our campers about farm life and inspiring them to be greener!

Lucy Baron

Senior Counselor

UK

TEACHER: NIDO DE AGUILAS

Caring, thoughtful and organised, Lucy is a fully-qualified elementary school teacher who studied at  Cambridge University, England. Lucy is always joking, laughing and having fun and brings so much happiness and joy to our camp community. When Lucy is not reading bedtime stories, soothing tears, or entertaining our campers on the farm she is a teacher at Nido de Aguilas School. She has spent many years living in Santiago with her husband and three children. Lucy is an amazing singer and knows the lyrics to thousands of songs, naturally she shines at the nightly campfire. Lucy is also an experienced tennis player and loves to do sports activities with our campers. She is a fan of field games and is a team player in every sense of the word. We are so lucky to have Lucy at camp this summer - she is one in a million, a better teacher would be hard to find and we are so excited to have an incredible summer experience with her again.

Lorreine Draper

Meet Lori Draper, one of our dedicated camp staff members at Camp Makemake! With over 15 years of teaching experience, Lori is a fifth-grade ESL teacher at Nido de Aguilas, and her passion for education shines through in everything she does. Lori has a heart for adventure and the great outdoors, having worked at Nido's own Summer Camp as well as inner-city youth programs in San Francisco, California, and Phoenix, Arizona. As a mother of three, she understands the importance of fostering a love for nature and outdoor activities in children. Lori can often be found hiking and exploring the natural world, making her the perfect role model to help kids at Camp Makemake discover the joys of outdoor adventure. We can't wait for Lori to bring her enthusiasm and expertise to our camp this summer, where she'll inspire young minds and create unforgettable memories.

Rebecca Carberg

Senior Counselor

TEACHER: NIDO DE AGUILAS

Becky is a fun-loving, enthusiastic and energetic counselor and fully qualified middle school teacher from Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is a mother of two and the most enthusiastic campfire singer out there. Having attended and worked at the amazing Interlocken Summer Camp in New Hampshire for many years she knows hundreds of camp songs, rhymes, chants and games and is all about creating serious fun and camp spirit! When she brings out her guitar and starts up some old classics around the campfire some serious magic happens!  Becky currently teaches humanities at Nido de Aguilas School in Santiago and brings with her great leadership skills and an invaluable wealth of experience working with our older children. Becky is an integral part of our team and someone we can always count on! Becky's easy laughter, generosity of spirit and outrageous sense of fun are so valued at camp.

Mor Rozner

Senior Counselor

Mor Rozner is an experienced educator and a devoted mother of two. With a rich background working with children in schools, camps, and various organizations, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role. Mor is certified in primary and preschool education, having successfully taught children of all ages in numerous capacities. Currently, she is a beloved fifth-grade teacher at Nido de Águilas, where her engaging teaching style and genuine care for her students have made a lasting impact. Mor has directed a division of Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, United States, where she has honed her leadership skills and fostered an inclusive, fun, and educational environment for campers. During the pandemic, she co-founded Camp in a Crate, an innovative camping experience that brought joy and connection to families through delivered activities and experiences.. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Mor enjoys cooking, exploring new cultures through travel, diving into  books, and spending  time outdoors with her family and friends. Her ability to connect with children and create a positive atmosphere is truly remarkable, and we are thrilled to welcome Mor to the Camp Mákemáke team for the second time this year. We love her warm, cheerful, and fun personality, and the campers adore  her. Mor’s passion for education and her dedication to nurturing the next generation make her an invaluable addition to our camp community.

Josefina Puig

Camp Counselor

STUDENT NURSE

This will be Josefina's second summer at Camp Makemake and we are so excited that she will be joining the team. Jose is a passionate and nurturing nursing student from the Universidad Andrés Bello.  Having lived in various places, including the United States and being fluent in both English and Spanish she will bring a unique cultural understanding to the camp. Josefina's love for the outdoors, fostered through a lifetime of camping experiences, drives her belief of the nurturing power of nature for children. Josefina loves sports, including athletics, field hockey and football. Josefina is dedicated to guiding and inspiring our campers and encouraging them to embrace their best selves.. We know Jose brings so much positive energy, experience, new activities and laughter to Camp Makemake! We're delighted to have her along for the ride.

Javiera Walker

Camp Counselor

This will be Javiera's second year working as a oounselor. Javiera is energetic and creative with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Whether she's leading Zumba sessions that get everyone moving, igniting campfires with her incredible percussion skills, or inspiring creativity with her fun-´filled ideas, Our campers and counselors can't help but flock around Javi because wherever she is that's where the fun is at. Javi is very much a natural leader and makes a spectacular role model for our campers.  As a fifth-year bilingual education student at Universidad de los Andes, she combines education and entertainment seamlessly. We are honoured that Javi will be joining us for the third time this summer and look forward to having a lot of fun with her.

Laura Steinmetz

Laura is a fabulous camp counselor. She is a passionate, empathetic, and inspiring individual who ensures that campers have a memorable and enriching experience while staying safe and having lots of fun in the great outdoors. This is her third year working at camp and we are thrilled to have her back.  Laura values diversity and inclusivity. They create an environment where all campers, regardless of their background or abilities, feel welcomed and appreciated. Laura always prioritizes the safety and well-being of campers, ensuring that activities are conducted with the utmost care and supervision. She is a good communicator and  listens actively with both campers and fellow staff, fostering open and honest dialogue. Laura is studying to be a bilingual teacher at the Universidad de los Andes. This will be her third summer at camp.

Constanza Hasbun

​​We are delighted to welcome Costi back for her second summer as a camp counselor at Camp Mákemáke. Currently in her fourth year of education at Universidad de los Andes, Costi has proven to be an invaluable member of the team. Her passion for teaching and the outdoors shines through in the fun and engaging activities she creates for the campers. Whether they’re hiking through nature, learning new skills, or playing creative games, Costi ensures that every moment is both educational and exciting.

She is also known for her organization and proactive attitude, always ready to take initiative and lead with confidence. Additionally, Costi’s background in yoga allows her to offer calming sessions where campers can relax, focus, and connect with nature in a peaceful environment. Above all, she takes her role as a counselor seriously, ensuring that the campers are safe, happy, and making the most of their summer experience. We’re thrilled to have her back on the team!

Josefina Correa

Josefina is an outstanding role model for our campers. She is deeply involved in the local community and is a rock for many. Her energy, compassion, creativity, and spirit are unstoppable at camp. She’s the type of person who dreams big and makes things happen with perseverance and hard work. Josefina worked as a fine arts teacher at Saint George's College for many years, bringing valuable experience and insights to our arts programs at Camp Mákemáke. We are truly grateful for her wisdom, kindness, and the guidance she offers us each day.

Leen Vandevelde

Senior Counselor

BELGIUM

HEAD TEACHER: COLEGIO HUMBOLDT

Leen is a fully qualified sports teacher and is every inch the dream counselor. She is warm, caring, fun and is an outstanding teacher and mother. Compassionate and kind, Leen is one of those people that really listen to children and make them feel valued. She is the Director at Humboldt School in Matanzas and has many years of outdoor education and teaching experience under her belt. Leen is full of ideas for treasure hunts, team games and sports. She worked for The Grange School as head of the sports department for many years. Leen also has experience teaching water sports, having run a windsurfing business for many years. We are honoured to have Leen participate for the fourth year running. Apart from her impressive experience and skill set Leen brings so much passion, enthusiasm, energy and buena onda to life at Camp Makemake. And we all love her to bits!

Zoe Sillano

TEACHER: SANTIAGO COLLEGE

Zoe is a highly organized, dedicated, and inspiring counselor. She studied at the University of Manchester and has been a qualified primary school teacher for many years. Zoe has worked at Craighouse School, Bradford School, and is currently teaching at Colegio Santiago College. She is a devoted mother of two. This will be her fourth year working with us at Camp Mákemáke, and we feel honored to have her back.

Zoe is a talented artist and brings a wealth of creativity to our art programs here at camp. She engages campers in all sorts of creative and imaginative activities using paint, found objects, clay, paper, pencils, scissors, and glue. Zoe’s ready smile and her kind, happy nature draw campers to her. She is a cherished and valued member of our fabulous team.

Juliette Faugloire

Senior Counselor

FRANCE

TEACHER: ALIANZA FRANCESA

Juliette is a vibrant and enerfetic mother of two boys ages 12 and 5 and is a dedicated 5th grade teacher. She has been living in Chile for 15 years and has worked with children since she was a teenager living in France as a rhythmic gymnastic coach, a summer camp counselor and has worked as a teacher at the Alianza Francesa in Santiago for almost ten years. For her there is nothing more fulfilling than working with children and feeling like she has made a difference to their lives. As a former gymnast, she channels her love for music through African dance and hiking. Her playful and creative spirit shines through as she contantly tells jokes and loves trying new things, such as sewing, embroidery, furniture making, singling , learning about sustainability or skateboarding (She easily admits she is not always successful!) Juliette can't wait to take care of the campers and share her love for nature, fun and sharing experiences together

Shelly De Eskinasis

SUBSTITUTE TEACHER: NIDO DE AGUILAS

Shelly is a creative and energetic educator with over ten years of experience working with children from 18 months to 12 years old. Shelly has a passion for making learning fun and exciting! From kindergartens, schools to private settings, she’s organized and led summer camps that blend science, play, and mindfulness, ensuring kids not only enjoy but remember what they’ve learned.
Shelly has run kids camps at top-notch locations like Hillside Hotel and Avantgarde Hotel, and she’s brought her unique flair to many spots in Bodrum. She’s developed an exciting program called “Shelly’s Science & Senses,” which mixes science, math, sensory activities, and art in a way that sparks curiosity and develops cognitive skills. You’ll often find her leading experiments, hands deep in activities that engage all five senses, or just being kids with kids. Shelly is fluent in both English and Spanish! This makes her even more flexible when interacting with campers from different backgrounds. Shelly's enthusiasm for education and innovation is contagious, and she’s thrilled to share her energy and resources with the campers at Camp Mákemáke this summer.
We can’t wait to see the magic Shelly brings to camp life this season!

Candelaria Figueroa

Camp Counselor

CHILE

STUDENT PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Candelaria will be joining us for the second time this year and we are very happy to welcome her and her amazing energy back to the team this summer. Candelaria speaks fluent English having spent many years living in England and Canada. She loves kids and  has had a lot of experience working as a babysitter. One of her great loves is horses, she is an accomplished rider and has worked closely with with horses in a horse therapy center. Candelaria is passionate about sports of all kinds, so passionate that she is on the way to becoming a sports teacher. She was captain and cofounder of the women's football team at her school  and has competed in swimming, tennis and rugby events. With her upbeat sunny personality,  enthusiasm and love of the great outdoors Cande is a wonderful addition to our Makemake team.

Isidora Rojas

Camp Counselor

Isidora Rojas, or "Isi" as she's affectionately known, brings a perfect blend of tranquility and warmth to camp.  She is the embodiment of serenity and empathy. Her calm demeanor and caring personality make campers feel safe, valued, and nurtured. As a fourth-year student in the Universidad de los Andes bilingual education program, Isi combines her academic education expertise with her passion for the outdoors to create meaningful learning experiences. Isi's  approachable nature makes her the go-to person for campers who need someone to talk to. She listens attentively and provides the support and guidance that campers need. She has a profound love for children and also the great outdoors. She thrives in natural settings and enjoys hiking and water sports. Isi's passion for nature is infectious, and she'll inspire campers to connect with and appreciate the beauty of the environment. We are delighted to having her back at camp for the third time. She is an inspiring role model for our campers.

Luz María Diaz

Camp Counselor

STUDENT TEACHER

Luzma is dynamic and proactive. When she is around there is always laughter. She has an outgoing, fun and happy personality. You will find her at camp doing all number of helpful things comforting a homesick camper to  olling up a sleeping bag to leading an impromtuZumba session.  Luzma is a student in  her 3rd year of Bilingual teacher training. She loves everything to do with educating children, both in and out of a classroom setting. . Luzma is energetic, fun-loving, and easy to love. Our campers adore her and we are thrilled to have her back with us for another year of fun and learning at camp.

Florencia Carcelen

Camp Counselor

STUDENT TEACHER

Flo is in her fourth year of studying to be a teacher at the Universidad de los Andes. This will be her second year at Camp Mákemáke and we are thrilled to haver her back.  She is a happy, calm person with a warm and loving personality. She loves children and has always stood out for his empathy and her desire to help others. The latter motivated her to study basic bilingual pedagogy and be able to make a difference through education in both English and Spanish. Her warmth and closeness with children reflects his ability to observe and be able to understand the emotions and needs that children have in order to help them with whatever they need and create a healthy, safe and welcoming environment. Flo has experience working with children as she has been a babysitter for many years and her teaching career has led her to work and live different experiences with children of all ages. Flo likes to do crafts and really enjoys seeing how children have fun creating and making different things with their own hands. Flo is a wonderful young educator and we are blessed to have her on our team.
